Inglemoor High School in Kenmore, Washington, was her alma mater. Thompson relocated to California to pursue a community college education and obtain a California residency. Later, she transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she earned a B.A. in Law and Society in 2004.

Thompson has clarified that she did not attend Washington State University (WSU) and instead attended a community college in California before transferring to UC Santa Barbara.
